Phylum Pseudomonadota (Proteobacteria), Class Gammaproteobacteria, Order Aeromonadales, Family Aeromonadaceae, Genus
Aeromonas, Aeromonas piscicola Beaz-Hidalgo et al. 2010.
Gram-negative, rod-shaped cells, 1.5-2 x 0.6-1 µm. Motile by a polar flagellum.
Beta-hemolytic colonies on sheep blood agar. Brown diffusible pigment is not
produced. Growth occurs at 4-37 ºC; optimum growth temperature 25-30 ºC.
Isolated from fish; 2 strains from salmon (Salmo salar), 2 strains from trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and 1 strain from a goldfish
(Carassius auratus). Resistant to vibriostatic agent O/129 (150 µg), resistant to ampicillin (10 µg), amoxicillin (25 µg) to amoxicillin +
clavulanic acid (20/10 µg), ticarcillin (75 µg), cephalothin (30 µg), erythromycin (5 µg) and penicillin (10 µg).
Isolated from diseased and dying fish.

Positive results for catalase, oxidase, nitrates reduction, ONPG, indole production,
lysine decarboxylase, Voges-Proskauer test, arginine dihydrolase, DNase, esculin
hydrolysis, gelatin hydrolysis, elastase, Tween 80 hydrolysis, starch hydrolysis, H2S
production from cysteine, acid production from: starch, arbutin (at 25 ºC), esculin, D-fructose, D-galactose, glycogen, D-glucose (with
gas), methyl-alpha-D-glucopyranoside, N-acetylglucosamine, glycerol, D-maltose, D-mannitol, D-mannose, D-ribose, sucrose,
salicin and D-trehalose.
Negative results for ornithine decarboxylase, methyl red, acid production from: D-adonitol, amygdalin, D- or L-arabinose, D- or
L-arabitol, D-cellobiose, dulcitol, erythritol, D- or L-fucose, gentiobiose, 2- or 5-ketogluconate, inositol, inulin, D-lactose, D-lyxose,
methyl-alpha-D-mannopyranoside, D-melezitose, D-melibiose, D-raffinose, L-sorbose, D-tagatose, D-turanose, xylitol,
methyl-beta-D-xylopyranoside, D- or L-xylose.
