Description is based upon a single isolate.
Gram-positive, nonmotile, 0.5-1.0 x 3-10 µm, spore-forming rods.
Moderately halophilic (optimum salinity of 60g/l NaCl), moderately alkaliphilic
(optimum pH = 8.5-10). Strictly anaerobic. Show respiratory growth with Se (VI)
(selenate), As (V) (arsenate), Fe (III), nitrate and fumarate as electron acceptors.
Colonies are formed on lactate / selenate / yeast extract-supplemented lakewater
medium. Produce red colonies, owing to elemental selenium precipitation, on
selenium oxide media. Grows fermentatively on fructose. Allantoin or urate are not
required for growth.
Growth temperature 20 ºC. NaCl is required for growth. Grow in 5-10% NaCl broth.
Isolated from arsenic-rich sediment of Mono Lake, California
