Phylum Bacillota (Firmicutes), Class Bacilli, Order Caryophanales, Family Bacillaceae, Genus Bacillus, Bacillus carboniphilus Fujita,
Shida, Takagi, Kunugita, Pankrushina and Matsuhashi 1996.
Gram-positive rods, 0.5-0.9/3.0-5.0 µm, motile by means of peritrichous flagella. Form
terminally or centrally ellipsoidal endospores, not swelling the sporangia.
Colonies on nutrient agar are circular, flat, smooth and grayish yellow; brown-red
pigment is produced on tryptone-soya agar. Growth is promoted by activated carbon
and graphite. No anaerobic growth. NaCl, allantoin or urate are not required for
growth. Grow at pH 5.6-7 and 2-7% NaCl. Growth temperature is 17-47 ºC. No growth
at 10 or 50 ºC.
Isolated from air using antibiotic-containing medium spotted with sterile graphite.
