Gram-variable rods and coccoid rods, 0.5-0.8 x 1.0-4.0 µm, motile. Central to  
subterminal, ellipsoidal / nearly spherical endospores in slightly swollen sporangia.
Spores are produced slowly and in small number in culture.
Colonies are cream to beige, circular with a smooth to slightly irregular margin,
low-convex with a glistening and rough surface on TSA. Aerobic. Grows at pH 6-7 and
in 0 to 10% NaCl (optimum 4-7%). Growth temperature 5-40 ºC (optimum 25-37 ºC).
Allantoin, urate or NaCl are not required for growth.
Isolated from biodeteriorated parts of the mural paintings discolored by microbial growths at the Servilia tomb (Roman necropolis of
Carmona, Spain) and the Saint-Catherine chapel (Castle Herbestein, Austria).

Positive results for catalase, casein hydrolysis (within 4 days), aesculin hydrolysis, gelatin hydrolysis (large inoculum), nitrate
reduction and oxidase. Weak reaction for acid production in 7% NaCl medium from: cellobiose, fructose, beta-gentibiose, D-glucose,
N-acetyl-D-glucosamine, 5-ketogluconate, maltose, D-mannose, salicin, sucrose and trehalose.

Negative results for arginine dihydrolase, beta-galactosidase (ONPG)  without added NaCl ( variable results in 7%NaCl medium),
lysine decarboxylase, ornithine decarboxylase, urease, indole production, H
2S production, Voges-Proskauer test, citrate utilization and
tryptophan deaminase.
No acid production in 7% NaCl medium from: L- or D-arabinose, adonitol, amygdalin, L- or D-arabitol, dulcitol, erythritol, L- or
D-fucose, glycogen, gluconate, meso-inositol, inulin, 2-ketogluconate, lyxose, melezitose, melibiose, raffinose, rhamnose, sorbitol,
sorbose, starch, xylitol, L- or D-xylose.

Variable and weak results for acid production in 7% NaCl medium from: D-mannitol, arbutin and galactose.
