Phylum Bacillota (Firmicutes), Class Bacilli, Order Caryophanales, Family Bacillaceae, Genus Bacillus, Bacillus dicomae Makuwa et
al. 2023.
Species description is based on a single strain.
Gram-positive, rod-shaped, 1.3-1.4 x 3.3-6.0 µm. Endospores are produced
(non-deforming the cell and located paracentrally / subterminally - admin note). Motile.
Colonies are off-white, circular, non-translucent and 2-6mm in diameter. Growth
occurs at 20-45 ºC (optimum, 30 ºC) and pH 5.0-11.0 (optimum, pH 6-7). Grows on
TSA supplemented with 1-6% (w/v) NaCl and have optimum growth at 1-2% NaCl.
Haemolysis is produced on sheep’s blood agar. Can grow on nutrient agar (NA),
nutrient broth (NB), Luria-Bertani (LB) agar, trypticase soy agar (TSA) and trypticase
soy broth (TSB). Facultatively anaerobic.
Isolated from surfacesterilized leaves of Dicoma anomala collected from Eisleben, Botlokwa, Limpopo Province, South Africa.

Positive results for catalase, casein hydrolysis, lipase, oxidase, skimmed milk hydrolysis, acid production from: amygdalin, arbutin,
aesculin, cellobiose, D-fructose, D-glucose, gluconate, glycerol, inositol, D-mannose, maltose, mannitol, N-acetylglucosamine, ribose,
sorbitol, salicin and trehalose.
Can utilize (Biolog GEN III MicroPlate system): maltose, trehalose, N-acetyl-D-glucosamine, alpha-D-glucose, D-fructose, inosine, 1%
sodium lactate, glycerol, D-glucose-6-phosphate, D-fructose-6-phosphate, gelatin, L-serine, guanidine HCL, D-gluconic acid, methyl
pyruvate, L-lactic acid and L-malic acid.
Negative results for arginine dihydrolase, citrate utilization, gelatinase, beta-galactosidase, H2S production, indole production, lysine
decarboxylase, ornithine decarboxylase, tryptophan deaminase, urease, Voges-Proskauer test, acid production from: amygdalin,
arabinose, melibiose, rhamnose and sucrose.
