Phylum Bacillota (Firmicutes), Class Bacilli, Order Caryophanales, Family Bacillaceae, Genus Bacillus, Bacillus fastidiosus den

Motile rods, 1.3 µm in diameter, centrally / paracentrally / subterminally / terminally,
ellipsoidal endospores in unswollen sporangia.
Colonies on 1% uric acid agar become opaque and are usually nonpigmented but
may become yellowish; margins are often ragged and have hair-like outgrowths, or
the colonies may be rhizoid. Colonies are surrounded by zones of clearing and the
reaction becomes strongly alkaline.
Aerobic. Grow at pH 7-9 ; no growth at pH 5-6. Grow in 2% and 5% NaCl; no growth in
7% and10% NaCl. NaCl is not required for growth. Growth temperature 10-40 ºC.
Allantoin and urate are required for growth.
Isolated from soil and poultry litter.

Positive results for hydrolysis of urea, oxidase and catalase.
Negative results for degradation of tyrosine, deamination of phenylalanine, hydrolysis of gelatin, egg yolk reaction, nitrate
reduction,citrate utilization, hydrolysis of casein and hydrolysis of starch.
