Species also includes strains from Bacillus lentus, Bacillus firmus and Bacillus circulans.
Gram-positive or Gram-variable, small, plump rods, 0.7-0.9 x 2.0-2.5 µm, motile,
central / paracentral or subterminal, ellipsoidal endospores in slightly swollen
sporangia.
Colonies are creamy/off-white with opaque center, smooth, flat, 1 mm in diameter
after 2 days on TSA; the margins are usually irregular with pointed projections that
may spread and become rhizoid in older cultures. Facultatively anaerobic.
Growth at pH 6-10.5, and at 30-40 ºC. Allantoin, urate or NaCl are not required for
growth.
Isolated from raw milk, partially decomposed wheat grain and infant bile.

D- or L-fucose, lyxose, methyl β-xyloside, glycerol, glycogen, gluconate, meso-inositol, 2- or 5-ketogluconate, sorbitol, sorbose, xylitol
and L-xylose.
Variable results for hydrolysis of urea. Weak and variable results for acid production from: L-arabinose, amygdalin, arbutin, cellobiose,
galactose, beta-gentibiose, inulin, lactose, D-mannitol, D-mannose, maltose, melezitose, melibiose, raffinose, rhamnose, ribose,
salicin, starch, sucrose, trehalose and D-xylose.
