Stout rods, 0.6-1.0 x 2.0-3.0 µm, forming subterminally, ellipsoidal (0.6-1.0 x 0.8-1.6
µm) endospores (in ageing cultures are paracentrally and occasionally laterally) in
unswollen sporangia.
Colonies are  yellow, smooth, shiny and circular. Aerobic. Alkalitolerant. Growth
occurs at pH 7 and 8 (optimum) and at 20-30 ºC (variable growth at 10 & 37 ºC).
Allantoin, urate or NaCl are not required for growth. Growth occurs in nutrient broth
with 2-9% NaCl added. Variable growth in 10% and 12% NaCl.
Isolated from soil.

Positive results for lactose utilization, hydrolysis of gelatin and casein.

Negative results for glycogen utilization,  N-acetylglucosamine utilization, deamination of phenylalanine, hydrolysis of hippurate,

Variable results for nitrate reduction, hydrolysis of Tween 40 and 60.
