Gram-positive rods, 0.5-0.8 x 1.7-4.8 µm. Motile. Produce ellipsoidal central to
subterminal spores in non-swollen sporangia. Parasporal crystals are not produced.
Colonies on R2A agar are creamy white, mucoid, translucent, raised and 3-4 mm in
diameter after 2 days of incubation at 37 ºC. Can grow on NA, LB medium, R2A agar
and TSA, but not on MacConkey agar. Grows at 15-55 ºC (optimum at 37 ºC), at pH
5-10 (optimum pH 7) and in up to 8% NaCl. Facultatively anaerobic.
Isolated from cheonggukjang, a Korean fermented soybean food product.

Positive results for catalase, caseinase, citrate utilization, esculin hydrolysis, beta-galactosidase, gelatinase, nitrate reduction,
oxidase, starch hydrolysis, acid production from: N-acetylglucosamine, L-arabinose, D-glucose (without gas), D-mannitol,
D-mannose, and maltose.
Can utilize (Biolog test): dextrin, trehalose, cellobiose, methyl beta-D-glucoside, alpha-D-glucose, D-fructose, D-mannitol, glycerol
and L-malic acid.
Negative results for arginine dihydrolase, indole production and urease.
No utilization of: propionic acid, maltose, D-galactose, D-sorbitol, D-gluconic acid, melibiose, trehalose and valeric acid.
