Gram-positive curved rods, 0.5-1.0 x 2.8-5.7 µm, nonmotile, rarely observed
subterminally endospores in swollen sporangia.
Colonies on Degryse 162 medium containing 5% NaCl are orange. Growth factors
are required for growth. Aerobic. Grow at pH 6.5-8.5 (optimum pH 8.0). Temperature
range 20-40 ºC; no growth at 15 or 45 ºC. Halophilic, NaCl is required for growth.
Optimum growth occurs in nutrient broth with 4-6% NaCl added.
Isolated from a sea salt evaporation pond on the Island of Sal in the Cape Verde Archipelago.

(weak), beta-gentiobiose, 5-ketogluconate, glycogen, melezitose, ribose (weak),
sorbose (weak), sucrose (weak), trehalose and D-xylose (weak).
Negative results for arginine dihydrolase, beta-galactosidase, lysine decarboxylase, hydrolysis of hippurate, hydrolysis of gelatin,
nitrate reduction, hydrolysis of casein, citrate utilization, hydrolysis of Tween 20 and Tween 80, alkaline phosphatase, esterase,
lipase, trypsin, acid phosphatase, acid production from: D- or L-arabinose, N-acetyl-D-glucosamine, adonitol, amygdalin, D- or
L-arabitol, arbutin, erythritol, D- or L-fucose, glycerol, galactose, D-glucose, gluconate, meso-inositol, inulin, 2-ketogluconate, lactose,
lyxose, maltose, D-mannitol, D-mannose, melibiose, raffinose, rhamnose salicin, sorbitol, starch, xylitol and L-xylose.
