Phylum Bacillota (Firmicutes), Class Bacilli, Order Caryophanales, Family Bacillaceae, Genus Bacillus, Bacillus nakamurai Dunlap et
al. 2016.
Gram-positive rods, 0.74-0.93 x 1.39-2.04µm. Motile. Produce central ellipsoidal
endospores in unswollen sporangia.
Colonies formed on TGY are creamy white, mucoid, translucent, raised and 3-4 mm
in diameter after 2 days of incubation at 37 ºC on R2A agar. Able to grow on NA, LB
agar, R2A agar, TSA and TGY agar. Produce a black pigment on peptone iron agar
after 72 h at 30 ºC. Growth occurs at 17-50 ºC (optimum 37 ºC), pH 5.5-10 (optimum
pH 7) and in 0-9% (w/v) NaCl. Strictly aerobic.
Isolated from soil in Tierra del Fuego, Argentina.

Positive results for caseinase, catalase, citrate utilization, gelatinase, starch hydrolysis, acid production from: glucose (without gas).
Can utilize: N-acetyl-D-galactosamine, 3-methyl glucose, D-fucose, D-arabitol, D-galacturonic acid, L-galactonic acid lactone,
D-glucuronic acid, D-saccharic acid and D-serine.

Negative results for oxidase.
No utilization of: trehalose, stachyose, raffinose, alpha-D-lactose and melibiose.
