According to Liu et al. (2019), B. plakortidis and B. lehensis are later heterotypic synonyms of Bacillus oshimensis Yumoto et al. 2005.
Gram positive, straight rods, 0.5-0.9 x 1.1-4.4 µm. Produce central / paracentral /
terminal, ellipsoidal endospores in unswollen sporangia. Non-motile or motile by
means of peritrichous flagella (former B. plakortidis strains).
Colonies are circular, convex, smooth and yellowish. Colonies are white, circular
when grown on PYA medium. Moderately halophilic and facultatively alkaliphilic.
Grows at pH 6.5-10 (optimum pH is 8.5), in 0-20% NaCl media (optimum 7%) and at
13-41 ºC (optimum 30 ºC). The temperature range for growth for B. plakortidis strains
is 4-30 ºC, with optimal growth at 15-20 ºC. NaCl is required for good growth; weak
growth at 0-3% NaCl. No growth occurs on MacConkey agar or Simmons’ citrate agar.
Aerobic; no anaerobic growth.
S. oshimens type strain was isolated from soil, Oshyamanbe, Oshima, Hokkaido, Japan.
B. plakortidis type strain, was isolated from the marine sponge Plakortis simplex from the Norwegian Sea.
B. lehensis type strain was isolated from soil collected from Leh, India.
