Phenotypically very closed to Psychrobacillus insolitus and Psychrobacillus psychrotolerans, and separable from these species by
anaerobic growth with KNO3, nitrate reduction and NaCl tolerance.
Basonym: Bacillus psychrodurans Abd El-Rahman, Fritze, Sproer and Claus 2002.
Gram-positive, nonmotile rods, 0.5-0.6 x 2.0-5.0 µm. Sporulation rarely observed;
terminally endospores in swollen sporangia. Spores are predominantly spherical in
casein-peptone soymeal-peptone agar cultures and predominantly ellipsoidal in
marine agar cultures.
Growth temperature 0-35 ºC, 2-5% NaCl (variable) and pH 7. No growth or very poor
growth on nutrient agar or in nutrient broth. Aerobic, grow anaerobically in media
containing KNO3. Allantoin or urate are not required for growth.
Isolated from garden soil in Egipt. No growth in the presence of lysozyme.

Negative results for degradation of tyrosine, deamination of phenylalanine, hydrolysis of esculin, urease, egg yolk reaction, indole
production, hydrolysis of casein, Voges-Proskauer reaction and citrate utilization.
Variable or weak results for gelatinase, hydrolysis of Tween 80, acid production from: L-arabinose, D-glucose, D-mannitol and
D-xylose.
