Gram positive / variable, 0.6–1.5 x 1.5–3.5 μm pleomorphic rods. Motile by
peritrichous and abundant flagella.
Spores ellipsoidal, central or paracentral, swelling the sporangium.The spore may fill
most of the sporangium and may lie laterally.
Colonies are opaque and smooth. Growth temperature from 0-3 ºC to 35 ºC.
Sporulates and germinates at 0 ºC. Facultatively anaerobic. Grows in 2% NaCl;
variable growth in 5% NaCl and no growth in 10% NaCl. Range of pH: 6-7.2 to 9.5.
Allantoin or urate are not required.
Isolated from soil and marshes.

Positive results for hydrolysis of esculin, hydrolysis of gelatin, beta-galactosidase, nitrate reduction, acid production from:

D-cellobiose, D-fructose, maltose, sorbitol, sucrose and trehalose.
