Synonym: Bacillus selenitireducens Switzer Blum et al. 2001. Species description is based on a single isolate.
Gram-positive, nonmotile, 0.5 x 2-6 µm, nonspore-forming rods.
Produce red colonies on lactate/selenite/yeast extract-supplemented lake water
medium incubated anaerobically at 20 ºC. Shows weak microaerobic growth and
anaerobic respiratory growth with Se(IV) (selenite), As(V) (arsenate), nitrate, nitrite,
trimethylamine oxide and fumarate as electron acceptors; quantitatively reduces Se(IV)
to Se (0) (elemental selenium) during growth. Moderately halophilic, with salinity
optimum of 24-60 g/l NaCl; moderately alkaliphilic. NaCl is required for growth. Grow in
2-10% NaCl broth. Optimum pH: 9-10. Allantoin or urate are not required for growth.
