Phylum Bacillota (Firmicutes), Class Bacilli, Order Caryophanales, Family Bacillaceae, Genus Bacillus, Bacillus wiedmannii Miller et
al. 2016.
Gram-positive rods, 1.2 x 2.8 µm, occuring singly or in pairs. Most strains are motile.
Produce central, ellipsoidal endospores, not deforming the cells.
Colonies on BHI agar at 37 ºC for 24 h are cream coloured, round and flat, with a
rough surface. Grows at 5-43 ºC (optimum at 20-40 ºC), at pH 5-10 and in 0-5% NaCl.
Haemolytic on sheep’s blood trypticase soy agar. Facultatively anaerobic.
Isolated from dairy foods and dairy environments. The type strain was isolated from a silo raw milk sample collected from a dairy
powder processing plant in the north-eastern USA.
Produces toxins HBL and the non-haemolytic toxin NHE. Cells are cytotoxic in a HeLa cell culture model.

Positive results for catalase, caseinase, esculin hydrolysis, egg yolk lecithinase, gelatinase, starch hydrolysis, Voges-Proskauer
reaction, acid production from: N-acetylglucosamine, arbutin, cellobiose, D-fructose, D-glucose, glycogen, maltose, ribose, salicin,
starch and trehalose.
Negative results for arginine dihydrolase, beta-galactosidase, H2S production, indole production, lysine decarboxylase, ornithine
decarboxylase, oxidase, tryptophan deaminase, urease, acid production from: D- and L-arabinose, D- and L-arabitol, D-adonitol,
dulcitol, erythritol, D- and L-fucose, galactose, gentiobiose, glycerol, inositol, inulin, 2- and 5-ketogluconate, lactose, D-lyxose,
D-mannitol, D-mannose, melibiose, melezitose, methyl alpha-D-glucoside, methyl alpha-D-mannopyranoside, raffinose, L-rhamnose,
L-sorbose, sucrose, D-sorbitol, D-tagatose, methyl beta-D-xylopyranoside, xylitol, D- and L-xylose.
Variable for citrate utilization, nitrate reduction, acid production from: amygdalin, potassium gluconate and mannose.
