Gram-negative rods. Non-spore-forming.
Colonies are moist. Grows on MacConkey agar and on BCSA where turn the medium
either alkaline or acidic. Growth is observed at 30 and 37 ºC; only a few strains are
able to grow at 42 ºC. Some strains can produce a purple pigment after several days.
Some strains are beta-haemolytic. Aerobic.
Isolated from sputum of cystic fibrosis patients and from environmental sources.

Positive results for beta-galactosidase, oxidase, acid production from: adonitol,
glucose, sucrose, maltose and lactose.
Can assimilate glucose, D-mannose, D-gluconate, adipate, L-malate and citrate.
Negative results for arginine dihydrolase, tryptophanases, urease and acid production from xylose.
Variable results for nitrate reduction, gelatin liquefaction, esculin hydrolysis, lysine decarboxylase, ornithine decarboxylase, utilization
of: L-arabinose, D-mannitol, N-acetylglucosamine, maltose, caprate and phenylacetate.
