Positive results for catalase, alpha-cymotrypsin, beta-glucosidase (weak reaction), nitrate reduction to nitrite (nitrite is not further
reduced), oxidase, Tween 40 and 80 hydrolysis, urease and valine arylamidase (weak reaction).
Can assimilate adonitol, cellobiose, D- and L-fucose, beta-gentiobiose, rhamnose, ribose, N-acetylglucosamine, DL-arabinose,
D-arabitol, D-fructose, galactose, gluconate, D-glucose, glycerol, inositol, 2-ketogluconate, malate, mannitol, D-mannose, DL-lactate,
phenylacetate, sorbitol, D-xylose, 3-hydroxybenzoate, acetate, adipate (weak reaction), caprate, citrate (weak reaction), propionate,
suberate and n-valerate.
Negative results for cystine arylamidase, beta-galactosidase (ONPG and PNPG), gelatin hydrolysis, indole production, lipase and
starch hydrolysis.
No assimilation of amygdalin, L-arabitol, arbutin, dulcitol, 5-ketogluconate, maltose (positive in Kang's study), D-raffinose, sucrose,
D-tagatose, xylitol, L-xylose, erythritol, glycogen (positive in Kang's study), inulin, melezitose, melibiose, methyl alpha-glucoside,
methyl alpha-D-mannoside, methyl beta-xyloside, L-sorbose, starch, D-turanose, itaconate, malonate and L-histidine.
Variable results (usually positive) for the assimilation of lactose, D-lyxose, salicin and trehalose.

Gram-negative slightly curved rods, 0.7-0.8 / 1.5-1.6 μm, occuring singly. Capsule is
present. Motile by means of one to four polar flagella. Poly-beta-hydroxybutyrate
granules are accumulated.
Colonies on LGI-P solid medium, are small with a yellow centre and white margins.
Colonies on BAc plates are yellowish, round, smooth and convex with entire margins.
Growth and acetylene reduction to ethylene are observed in nitrogen-free semi-solid
media. Aerobic metabolism but can fix nitrogen microaerobically. Grows at 22-40 ºC;
optimum temperature is 30 ºC. Grows on MacConkey medium at 29 ºC (not at 37 ºC).
Isolated from the rhizosphere, rhizoplane, roots and stems of maize, teosinte and sugarcane plants grown in different geographical
regions from Brazil, Mexico and South Africa. Nitrogen-fixing bacterium.
