Paraburkholderia unamae
Description is based mostly on API 20NE, API ZYM and API 50CH results.

Positive results for catalase, nitrate reduction to nitrite (nitrite is not further reduced), oxidase, urease and valine arylamidase (weak
reaction).
Can assimilate adipate, acetate, citrate, caprate, itaconate, propionate, suberate, adonitol, cellobiose, L-malate, malonate, adonitol,  
phenylacetate, N-acetylglucosamine, D- and L-arabinose, D-arabitol, cellobiose, D-fructose, L-fucose, galactose, gluconate, 2- and
5-ketogluconate, D-glucose, glycerol, inositol, DL-lactate, mannitol, D-mannose, rhamnose, sorbitol, trehalose, n-valerate and
D-xylose.

Negative results for alpha-chymotrypsin, cystine arylamidase, beta-glucosidase, beta-galactosidase (ONPG and PNPG), esculin
hydrolysis, gelatin hydrolysis, indole production and lipase.
No assimilation of L-histidine, amygdalin, L-arabitol, arbutin, dulcitol, erythritol, D-fucose, beta-gentiobiose, methyl
alpha-D-glucoside, glycogen, inulin, lactose, D-lyxose, maltose, melibiose, melezitose, methyl alpha-D-mannoside, methyl
beta-xyloside, D-raffinose, ribose, salicin, starch, L-sorbose, sucrose, D-tagatose, D-turanose, xylitol and L-xylose.

Gram-negative rods, 0.5-0.8 / 1.8-2.5 μm. Motile by means of one flagellum or a polar
tuft of four to eight flagella. Non-spore-forming. Can produce siderophores.
Colonies on BAc plates are yellowish, round, smooth and convex with entire margins,
1-2 mm in diameter. Growth and acetylene reduction to ethylene are observed in
nitrogen-free semi-solid media. Grows at 29 ºC, but not at 42 ºC. Grows poorly on
MacConkey medium at 29 ºC (not growing at 37 ºC). Not growing on BCSA medium.
Aerobic. NaCl range for growth: 0-1%.
Isolated from the rhizosphere, rhizoplane and surface-sterilized roots and stems of maize, sugarcane and cofee (Coffea arabica and
Coffea canephora) plants cultivated in Mexico. Nitrogen-fixing bacterium.
