Basonym: Polynucleobacter necessarius Hahn et al. 2009. Four strains currently classified as Polynucleobacter necessarius subsp.
asymbioticus were reclassified as Polynucleobacter asymbioticus comb. nov., Polynucleobacter duraquae sp. nov.,
Polynucleobacter yangtzensis sp. nov. and Polynucleobacter sinensis sp. nov.
Gram-negative short rods, 0.4–0.5 x 0.7–1.2 μm. Non-motile. Non-spore-forming.
Multiple nucleoid-like structures are usually absent, but elongated cells may possess
a few nucleoid-like structures.
Grows on NSY, R2A, Luria–Bertani and peptone media. Colonies on NSY agar are
non-pigmented, circular and convex with smooth surface. Growth occurs at 5-34 ºC
and in 0-0.4% (w/v) NaCl. Weak growth occurs in 0.5% (w/v) NaCl, and no growth in
0.6% (w/v) NaCl or higher concentrations. Facultatively anaerobic.
Isolated from a small acidic freshwater pond located in the Austrian Alps at an altitude of 1300 m.

Positive for catalase and oxidase.
Can assimilate acetate, propionate, pyruvate, malate, succinate, fumarate, D-galacturonic acid, L-cysteine, L-glutamate, L-aspartate,
urea, and thiosulfate. Weak reaction for formic acid, glyoxylic acid, malonic acid, levulinic acid, D-mannose, D-glucose, D-galactose,
D-lyxose, D-fructose, L-fucose, D-sorbitol, L-alanine, L-asparagine and betaine.
No assimilation of glycolate, oxalate, oxaloacetate, L-serine or citrate.
