Gram-negative, thin rods 0.3-0.5 / 2-5 μm, often grouped in pairs. Filaments up to 70
μm long are produced under unfavorable growth conditions. Motile by means of a
single polar flagellum. Non-spore-forming. Some cells contain sulfur inclusions.
Temperature range is 60–87 ºC, optimal growth temperature is76-78 ºC. Range of pH
is 6.0-8.5, optimally 7-7.5. Strictly aerobic and obligately chemolithoautotrophic, using
reduced sulfur compounds (hydrogen sulfide, tetrathionate, elemental sulfur, and
thiosulfate) as electron donors and carbon dioxide as the carbon source. A synthetic
medium with either sulfide or thiosulfate as the sole energy source can be used for
initial cultivation.
