Phylum Pseudomonadota (Proteobacteria), Class Betaproteobacteria, Order Burkholderiales, Family Burkholderiaceae, Genus
Thermothrix, Thermothrix thiopara Caldwell et al. 1981, type species of the genus.
Gram-negative, thin rods 0.5-0.1 / 3-5 μm, often grouped in pairs. Filaments up to 70
μm long are produced under unfavorable growth conditions. Motile by means of a
single polar flagellum. Non-spore-forming. Elemental sulfur is frequently deposited
as extracellular granules but is not deposited intracellularly.
A synthetic medium with either sulfide or thiosulfate as the sole energy source can be
used for initial cultivation. Temperature range is 60-80 ºC, optimal growth temperature
is 70 ºC. Facultatively aerobic and facultatively chemolithoautotrophic.
Isolated from hot springs.

In batch culture, elemental sulfur, sulfite, and polythionates accumulate as transient intermediates but are subsequently oxidized to
sulfuric acid. In continuous culture, elemental sulfur is not deposited during steady-state growth but is deposited during the transition
from low to high dilution rates. During transfer from nitrate broth to autotrophic media containing thiosulfate, cell filaments often form
and become encased in a coating of elemental sulfur.
Denitrification occurs only heterotrophically and during denitrification, N2 is the primary end product. Nitrite accumulates as a transient
intermediate.
