Two subgroups (group 1A and 1B) have been described.
Gram-negative, curved cells, 0.2–0.4 x 1–3 μm. Rapid darting motility. Motile by means
of a single polar flagellum at one or both ends of the cell.  
Colonies are 1-3 mm in diameter, convex with an entire edge, dirty-yellow-pigmented,
after 48 hours inbation. Strains will grow on nutrient agar, charcoal-based and potato
starch media, and on media containing  KMnO
4, 0.001% sodium arsenite, 32 mg/l  
cephalothin, 100 U/l 5-fluorouracil, 0.02% safranin and 2% NaCl. No growth in media
with 1% glycine. Optimum growth temperature 25 ºC. No growth at 42 ºC.
Most strains of subgroup 2 grow under aerobic or microaerobic conditions at 37 ºC, in
contrast with subgroup 1 strains.
Isolated from human bacteremia and diarrhea; from chicken carcasses; from bovine, ovine, and porcine abortions; from porcine
feces, and from mastitis in cattle.
Uncertain. Associated with enteritis in humans; mastitis and abortion in animals.

Positive results for nitrate reduction, catalase, oxidase and indoxyl acetate hydrolysis.
Negative results for urease, selenite reduction, hippurate hydrolysis, and
H2S production on TSI. No carbohydrates fermentation.
Variable results for alkaline phosphatase.
