Phylum Pseudomonadota (Proteobacteria), Class Epsilonproteobacteria, Order Campylobacterales, Family Campylobacteraceae,
Genus Campylobacter, Campylobacter novaezeelandiae Bloomfield et al. 2020.
Gram-negative, spiral rods, 3-4 µm long. Motile.
After 2days incubation on Columbia horse blood agar at 37 ºC in a microaerobic
atmosphere containing H2, colonies are small (0.5-1mm), grey, smooth and entire
with slightly convex surfaces. Strong, dark alpha-haemolysis is seen on Columbia
horse blood agar. A distinctive ‘Campylobacter’ odour is produced. On mCCDA agar,
colonies are small and grey with irregular margins. Grows microaerobically (without
hydrogen) at 42 ºC, faster at 37 ºC. They grow anaerobically at 37 ºC but do not grow
in ambient air at 37 ºC. They grow on nutrient agar, nutrient agar +1% w/v glycine and
nutrient agar +2% w/v NaCl, but not on MacConkey agar or on nutrient agar with 0.1%
w/v selenite. Only 1/6 isolates grew on nutrient agar containing 0.04 %w/v tetrazolium
chloride, that isolate was also capable of reducing tetrazolium. They grow poorly on
Mueller-Hinton agar containing either sheep or horse blood.
Isolated from bird faeces and rivers in New Zealand. Resistant to cephalothin. Susceptible to nalidixic acid.
Undetermined. Capable of causing death in the Galleria mellonella larval model.

Positive results for catalase, indoxyl acetate hydrolysis nitrate reduction and oxidase.
Negative results for alkaline phosphatase, H2S production on TSI, hippurate hydolysis and urea hydrolysis .
