Gram-negative, curved cells, 0.2-0.4 x 1-3 μm. Rapid darting motility. Motile by means
of a single polar flagellum.
Colonies are grayish, 2-3 mm in diameter, and have a flat irregular shape after 48
hours inbation. Grows on charcoal-based and potato starch media, and on media
containing up to 2.0% ox-bile, and 32 mg/l cephalothin and 64 mg/l cefoperazone.
No growth on MacConkey agar. No growth is observed in the presence of 0.05%
basic fuchsin or 1% glycine. Most strains produce alpha-hemolysis on blood agar.
Microaerophilic. Optimum growth temperature 25-30 ºC. Growth at 42 ºC is variable.
Isolated from from chicken carcasses, preputial fluids of bulls; from bovine, ovine, and porcine abortions; from diarrheic feces of
animals including sheep & cattle.
