(non-Clostridium sensu stricto), Clostridium caenicola Shiratori, Sasaya, Ohiwa, Ikeno, Ayame, Kataoka, Miya, Beppu and Ueda 2009.
Gram-negative, straight or slightly curved rods, 0.4-0.6 x 1.8-4.8 µm. Motile by a few
flagella at a polar attachament point (lophotrichously flagellated). Spores are oval,
terminally located.
Colonies are glossy white in colour on solid agar containing cellobiose as a carbon
source. Colony formation is observed under anaerobic conditions. Obligately
anaerobic, thermophilic and chemo-organotrophic. Grow in 0-1.5% NaCl , optimum in
1.0% NaCl medium. Grow at 50-70 ºC, optimally at 60 ºC. Optimum pH 6.5; range
6.0-8.0. Fermentation products are hydrogen, carbon dioxide, acetate, lactate and
ethanol.
Isolated from anaerobic sludge of a cellulose-degrading methanogenic bioreactor.

produced from: amygdalin, arabinose, cellobiose, glucose, maltose, mannitol, salicin
& starch.
Negative results for casein hydrolysis, catalase, gelatin hydrolysis, indole production, lecithinase, lipase, nitrate reduction, substrate
utilized and/or acid produced from: adonitol, cellulose, dulcitol, erythritol, fructose, galactose, glycogen, glycerol, inositol, inulin,
lactose, mannose, melezitose, melibiose, raffinose, rhamnose, ribose, sorbitol, sorbose, sucrose, trehalose, xylose & xylitol.
