Gram-positive rods, 0.4-0.5 x 5.0-9.0 µm, occuring singly or in pairs. Cell wall is
composed of three dense layers with two thick layers and a middle thinner layer
separated by two less dense spaces. Motile by few laterally inserted flagella. Spores
are oval, subterminal, swelling the cell; spores formation was induced in the
presence of oxygen and vitamins.
Brown, circular colonies, 1-2 mm in diameter, appeared after 3 days incubation at 50
ºC in roll tubes containing basal agar medium. Strictly anaerobic. Grow in sea salt
medium 12-55 g/l, optimally in sea salt medium 30 g/l. Heterotrophic. Yeast extract is
required for growth on sugars. Grow at 20-58 ºC, optimally at 45 ºC. No growth at 60
ºC. Optimum pH 6.6; range 5.8-8.2. Ferments yeast extract, peptone, Bio-trypticase,
and Casamino acids into a mixture of volatile fatty acids.
Isolated from a North Atlantic Ocean deep-sea hydrothermal chimney.
Undetermined. Because of the ability to degrade amino acids and peptides, the possibility of harmful effects cannot be excluded.

glycerol, maltose, mannose and ribose.
Negative results for arginine dihydrolase, citrate utilization, beta-galactosidase, H2S production, indole production, nitrate reduction,
lysine decarboxylase, ornithine decarboxylase, tryptophan deaminase, urease, Voges-Proskauer reaction, substrate utilized and/or
acid produced from: arabinose, cellobiose, dulcitol, lactose, mannitol, melibiose, raffinose, rhamnose, sorbitol, starch, sucrose and
xylose.
