(Clostridium sensu stricto), Clostridium colicanis Greetham, Gibson, Giffard, Hippe, Merkhoffer, Steiner, Falsen and Collins 2003.
Gram-negative rods, 0.9-1.0 x 3.0-10.0 µm. Nonmotile. Spores are oval to oblong,
central to subterminal.
Colonies are 3-5 mm in diameter, round, with undulate margin and are slightly convex,
opaque, glossy, and grayish-white. Hemolysis is negative. Anaerobic. Cultures in PYG
broth have a pH of 4.8 after incubation for 6 days.
Growth temperature 30-45 ºC, optimum 37-40 ºC. No growth at 20 or 50 ºC.
Isolated from feces of a male Labrador dog.

Positive results for esculin hydrolysis, nitrate reduction, starch hydrolysis (weak),
urease, substrate utilized and/or acid produced from: cellobiose, esculin (weak),
fructose, galactose, glucose, lactose, maltose, mannose, ribose, salicin (weak),
starch (weak) and sucrose (weak).
Negative results for casein hydrolysis, catalase, gelatin hydrolysis, indole production, lecithinase, lipase, substrate utilized and/or
acid produced from: amygdalin, arabinose, glycogen, inositol, mannitol, melezitose, melibiose, raffinose, rhamnose, sorbitol,
trehalose and xylose.
Variable results for hippurate hydrolysis.
