Phylum Pseudomonadota (Proteobacteria), Class Gammaproteobacteria, Order Enterobacterales, Family Erwiniaceae, Genus Erwinia,
Erwinia tasmaniensis Geider et al. 2006.
Gram-negative, straight rods, 0.5-1.0 x 1.5-2.0 μm. Motile. Non-spore-forming.
Colonies on Standard I agar (Merck) are light-beige, circular, smooth, translucent, flat
to slightly convex and about 3 mm in diameter after 24–48 h at 28 ºC. No diffusible or
fluorescent pigment is observed. Strains grow well on Standard I agar and nutrient
agar at 28 ºC, but not at 36 ºC. Can grow in 5% NaCl. Produces levan from sucrose.
Facultatively anaerobic.
Isolated from pear flowers, apple flowers and bark in Australia.
Not pathogenic on apples or pears.

Positive results for catalase, beta-galactosidase, Voges-Proskauer test and acid production from glucose (without gas production).
Can utilize at 28 ºC within 3 days: L-arabinose, ribose, glucose, fructose, mannitol, N-acetylglucosamine, sucrose, trehalose, melibiose
(weak) and citrate.
Negative results for arginine hydrolysis, gelatinase, H2S production, indole production, lysine decarboxylase, nitrate reduction, ornithine
decarboxylase, oxidase, tryptophan deaminase, and urease.
No utilization of sorbitol, rhamnose, amygdalin, glycerol, erythritol, D-arabinose, D- and L-xylose, adonitol, methyl beta-D-xyloside,
mannose, sorbose, dulcitol, methyl alpha-D-mannoside, methyl alpha-D-glucoside, arbutin, esculin, salicin, cellobiose, maltose,
lactose, inulin, melezitose, raffinose, starch, glycogen, gentiobiose, D-turanose, D-lyxose, D-tagatose, D- and L-fucose, D- and
L-arabitol, gluconate, 2- and 5-ketogluconate.
Variable utilization of galactose, xylitol and inositol.
