Phaseolibacter flectens (Johnson 1956) Halpern et al. 2013., type species of the genus.

Old synonym:
Pseudomonas flectens Johnson 1956.
Gram-negative, straight rods, 0.5-0.8 x 1.2-2.3 µm. Motile by means of one or two
polar flagella (only when grown on media without sucrose).
Colonies grown on LB or R2A agar incubated 48h at  28 ºC, are 1 mm in diameter;
while on sucrose-supplemented media, colonies are 3-5 mm in diameter, smooth,
foggy and greyish white in colour and produce large amounts of mucus. Grows at
4-44 ºC (optimum 28-30 ºC) and with 0-60% sucrose (optimum 10-25%). Facultatively
anaerobic.
Isolated from French bean (Phaseolus vulgaris).
Plant-pathogenic bacterium on French bean pods.

Positive results for arginine dihydrolase, catalase, beta-galactosidase, lysine decarboxylase, ornithine decarboxylase, nitrate reduction
to N
2, Voges-Proskauer test, acid production from D-fucose (weak), glycerol, L-arabinose (weak), esculin, D-fructose, D-glucose,
D-ribose (weak), sucrose and D-xylose (weak).

Negative results for gelatin hydrolysis, H
2S production, indole production,  tryptophan deaminase, oxidase, urease, acid production from
D-arabinose, D-adonitol, D- and L-arabitol, amygdalin, arbutin, cellobiose, dulcitol, erythritol, L-fucose, glycogen, gentiobiose,
gluconate, 2- and 5-ketogluconate, inositol, inulin, lactose, D-lyxose, D-mannose, D-mannitol, maltose, melezitose, raffinose,
L-rhamnose, L-sorbose, D-sorbitol, methyl alpha-D-mannopyranoside, methyl alpha-D-glucopyranoside, N-acetylglucosamine, salicin,
starch, trehalose, turanose, D-tagatose, L-xylose, methyl beta-D-xylopyranoside, and xylitol.

Variable results for citrate utilization (type strain is positive), acid production from D-galactose (type strain is negative) and melibiose
(type strain is negative).
