Lancefield group D.
Gram-positive coccoid cells, grouped in pairs or chains. Non-spore-forming.
Non-motile.
Colonies are non-haemolytic, semitranslucent, round, entire, 0.25-0.55 mm in
diameter after 24 h growth on 5% sheep blood agar. Facultatively anaerobic. Growth
is enhanced in CO2. Grows in 10% bile. Does not grow in conventional laboratory
liquid media with or without serum (brain-heart infusion broth (Oxoid), Todd-Hewitt
broth (Oxoid), nutrient broth (Oxoid), fastidious anaerobe broth (LabM)). Grow at 37 ºC.
No growth at 10 ºC.
Isolated from dead grey seal (Halichoerius grypus) and dead porpoise (Phocoena phocoena), found on the east coastline of Scotland.
Isolated from the mesentery, kidney, pericardial fluid, peritoneal fluid and small intestine of a porpoise dead by severe enteritis and
peritonitis.

Description is based on API Rapid ID 32 Strep and API 20 Strep results.
Positive results for arginine dihydrolase, leucine arylamidase and acid production from trehalose.
Negative results for alkaline phosphatase, catalase, esculin hydrolysis, alanine phenylalanine proline arylamidase, alpha- and
beta-galactosidase, beta-glucosidase, beta-glucuronidase, N-acetyl-beta-glucosaminidase, hippurate hydrolysis,
beta-mannosidase, nitrate reduction, pyroglutamic acid arylamidase, Voges-Proskauer test, acid production from: L-arabinose,
D-arabitol, cyclodextrin, glycogen, inulin, lactose, maltose, mannitol, melibiose, melezitose, methyl beta-D-glucopyranoside, pullulan,
raffinose, ribose, sorbitol, starch, sucrose and tagatose.
Variable results for glycyl tryptophan arylamidase and urease.
