Gram-positive, coccoid to rod-shaped cells, occurring in chains. Non-motile.
Colonies on trypticase soy agar supplemented with 5% sheep blood incubated at 35
ºC for 24 h are 1 mm in diameter, grey-white, circular, convex, with an entire margin and
alpha-haemolytic. Growth occurs at 10 ºC, but not at 45 ºC in heart infusion broth. No
gas is produced in MRS broth. Grows in the presence of bile, 6.5% NaCl and pyruvate,
but not tellurite. Facultatively anaerobic.
Isolated from ground beef. Resistant to optochin. Sensitive to vancomycin.

Positive results for esculin hydrolysis, beta-glucosidase, alpha- and beta-galactosidase, alanyl-phenylalanine-proline arylamidase,
hippurate hydrolysis, pyrrolidonyl arylamidase, acid production from glucose (without gas production), glycerol, inulin (weakly),
maltose, D-mannitol (weakly), melibiose, methyl alpha-glucopyranoside, methyl beta-D-glucopyranoside, pullulan (weakly), raffinose,
D-ribose, D-sorbitol, sucrose, trehalose, tagatose (weakly), and xylose (weakly).

Negative results for arginine hydrolysis, alkaline phosphatase, catalase, beta-glucuronidase, N-acetyl-beta-glucosaminidase,
beta-mannosidase, starch hydrolysis, urea hydrolysis, Voges-Proskauer test, acid production from D-arabitol, alpha-cyclodextrin,
glycogen and sorbose.

Variable and weak results for acid production from arabinose and lactose.
