Phylum Bacillota (Firmicutes), Class Bacilli, Order Lactobacillales, Family Enterococcaceae, Genus Vagococcus, Vagococcus
entomophilus Killer et al. 2014.
Gram-positive, ovoid cocci, 0.7-0.9 x 0.5-1.1 µm, occuring single or grouped in pairs.
Non-spore-forming. Non-motile.
Colonies on TSYE agar under aerobic conditions after 48 h incubation at 37 ºC are
generally triangular or disc-shaped with regular edges, white, smooth and reach
0.82-2.75 mm in diameter. Grows at 10 ºC and 40 ºC. Grows at pH 5-10. Facultatively
anaerobic. L-lactic acid is produced from glucose (TSYE broth + 5g glucose / L).
Isolated from the digestive tract of wasp (Vespula vulgaris), Modrany, Czech Republic.
Susceptible to some cephalosporines, macrolides and some penicillin-derived antibiotics. Resistant to aminoglycosides,
fluoroquinolones, sulphonamides, mupirocine and metronidazole.

Positive results for alpha-chymotrypsin, alpha-glucosidase, acid phosphatase, alkaline phosphatase, esterase (C4), esterase lipase
(C8), leucine arylamidase, naphthol-AS-BI-phosphohydrolase, arginine arylamidase, phenylalanine arylamidase, tyrosine
arylamidase, alanine arylamidase, glycine arylamidase, histidine arylamidase and serine arylamidase.
Can utilize: inulin, N-acetyl-D-glucosamine, amygdalin, arbutin, cellobiose, D-fructose, gentiobiose, alpha-D-glucose, D-mannose,
methyl-bets-D-glucoside, salicin, sucrose, trehalose, adenosine and uridine.
Negative results for arginine dihydrolase, cystine arylamidase, alpha- and beta-galactosidase, beta-glucosidase,
alpha-arabinosidase, beta-glucuronidase, alpha-mannosidase, N-acetyl-beta-glucosaminidase, nitrates reduction, pyroglutamic acid
arylamidase, beta-galactosidase-6-phosphate, alpha-fucosidase, proline arylamidase, leucyl glycine arylamidase, glutamyl glutamic
acid arylamidase, lipase (C14), valine arylamidase, trypsin, urease, catalase, oxidase, indole production, gelatin hydrolysis &
Voges-Proskauer test.
