Phylum Bacillota (Firmicutes), Class Bacilli, Order Lactobacillales, Family Lactobacillaceae, Genus Lentilactobacillus,
Lentilactobacillus laojiaonis Zhao, Yang, Bao, Wang, Miao, Wang, Shen and Li 2022.
Gram-positive rods (0.5-0.8 x 1.0-3.0 µm) that occur as single cells, in pairs, or in short
chains. Nonmotile. Nonspore-forming.
Colonies are white, smooth, convex, 0.5-2.0 mm in diameter after 48 h of incubation
on modified MRS agar at 37 ºC under microaerobic conditions. Can grow at 15-45
ºC, optimally at 37 ºC. Range of pH 4.5-8.5, optimum pH 7.0. Can grow in 0-6% NaCl.
Facultatively anaerobic.
Isolated from a mud cellar (pit mud) which has been continuously used over hundred of years for the fermentative production of
Chinese strong-flavour baijiu.

Positive results for acid and alkaline phosphatase, cystine arylamidase, esterase (C4), esterase lipase (C8), gelatin hydrolysis,
leucine arylamidase, naphtol-AS-BI-phosphohydrolase, trypsin, valine arylamidase, fermentation of L-arabinose, D-fructose, glucose
(acid without gas production), gluconate (acid without gas production), mannose, melibiose, methyl alpha-D-glucopyranoside,
N-acetylglucosamine, raffinose, ribose, methyl beta-D-xylopyranoside, and D-xylose.
Negative results for catalase, hippurate hydrolysis, indole production, pyruvate utilization, urease, fermentation of adonitol, amygdalin,
arbutin, D-arabinose, D- and L-arabitol, cellobiose, dulcitol, erythritol, aesculin, L- and D-fucose, galactose, gentiobiose, 2- and
5-ketogluconate, glycerol, glycogen, inositol, inulin, lactose, D-lyxose, maltose, mannitol, melezitose, methyl
alpha-D-mannopyranoside, methyl alpha, D-xyloside, rhamnose, salicin, sorbitol, L-sorbose, starch, sucrose, D-tagatose, trehalose,
turanose, xylitol, and L-xylose.
