Gram-positive cocci, 0.7-1.0 µm in diameter, occuring singly, in pairs and tetrads.
Non-motile. Non-spore-forming.
Colonies are greyish white, low-convex, circular, entire, opaque and about 1 mm in
diameter after 24 hours cultivation on MRS plates at 37 ºC. Growth occurs at 15-45 ºC,
optimally at 32-34 ºC. Grows at pH range 3.5-8.3, optimally at pH 6.0-6.8. Grows in 6.5
and 7% NaCl, not in 4% NaCl. Can grow in up to 7% (v/v) ethanol. Facultatively
anaerobic.
Isolated from the walls of a distilled-spirit-fermenting cellar in Hebei Province, China.

Positive results for esculin hydrolysis, acid production from amygdalin, arbutin, cellobiose, esculin, fructose, galactose, gentiobiose,  
glucose (without gas production), mannose, maltose,methyl alpha-D-glucoside, N-acetylglucosamine, salicin, sucrose, trehalose,
and D-tagatose.

Negative results for arginine hydrolysis, catalase, acid production from adonitol, D- and L-arabinose, D- and L-arabitol, dulcitol,
erythritol, D- and L-fucose, glycerol, glycogen, gluconate, 2- and 5-ketogluconate, inositol, inulin, D-lyxose, mannitol, methyl
alpha-D-mannoside, melibiose, melezitose, raffinose, ribose, sorbitol, sorbose, starch, methyl beta-D-xyloside, xylitol, D- and
L-xylose.

Variable results for the fermentation of lactose, rhamnose and D-turanose.
