The formation of gas from glucose on Gibson’s semisolid medium would place
Lactobacillus psittaci to the group of obligately
heterofermentative species. The phylogenetic data are not consistent with that biochemical characteristic.
Gram-positive, cocci-bacilli to rod-shaped cells, occurring singly or in pairs.
Nonspore-forming.
After 24 h incubation on Columbia horse blood agar, colonies are 1-2 mm in
diameter, colorless, and do not produce an odor; alpha-hemolytic. Optimum pH is
5.5-7.5. Can grow in 2% NaCl medium, not in 6% NaCl. Facultatively anaerobic.
Isolated from the lungs of a dead hyacinth macaw (Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus). Habitat is not known.
The recovery of L. psittaci in pure culture from an inflamed air sac is indicative that this organism is an opportunistic pathogen.

Obligately homofermentative (hexoses are fermented almost exclusively to lactic
acid by the Embden-Meyerhof pathway; pentoses or gluconate are not fermented).

Positive results for esculin hydrolysis, acid phosphatase, alanine-phenylalanine-proline arylamidase, alkaline phosphatase, cystine
arylamidase, alpha-galactosidase,alpha-glucosidase, beta-glucosidase, leucine arylamidase, phosphoamidase, valine
arylamidase (weak reaction), fermentation of: glucose (acid and gas are produced in Gibson’s semisolid medium), raffinose, and  
sucrose.

Negative results for catalase, gelatin hydrolysis, hippurate hydrolysis, nitrate reduction, oxidase, urease, Voges-Proskauer reaction,
N-acetyl-beta-glucosaminidase, arginine dihydrolase, chymotrypsin, esterase C-4, ester lipase C8, lipase C14, fucosidase, beta-
galactosidase, beta-glucuronidase, glycyl- tryptophan arylamidase, alpha-mannosidase, beta-mannosidase, methyl beta-D-
glucopyranosidase, pyrazinamidase, pyroglutamic acid arylamidase, pyrrolidonyl arylamidase, trypsin, fermentation of: arabitol,
arabinose, glycogen, lactose, mannitol, melezitose, melibiose, ribose, sorbitol, tagatose, trehalose, and xylose.
