Homotypic synonym: Ligilactobacillus ruminis (Sharpe et al. 1973) Zheng et al. 2020.
Rods (0.6-0.8 x 3-5 μm) occurring singly, in pairs and in short chains. Strains isolated
from the rumen are motile by peritrichous flagella. Strains isolated from sewage are
rarely motile.
Anaerobic. Surface growth is obtained only under reduced oxygen pressure; growth in
liquid media is improved by the addition of cysteine-HCl. No growth at 15 ºC. Strains
isolated from the rumen can grow at 45 ºC, but strains isolated from sewage not.
Isolated from rumen of cow, sewage and from the intestines of human, pig and cattle.

Obligately homofermentative (hexoses are fermented almost exclusively to lactic acid by the Embden-Meyerhof pathway; pentoses or
gluconate are not fermented).
Positive results for fermentation of: amygdalin, cellobiose, esculin, fructose, galactose, glucose (without gas production), maltose,
mannose, melibiose, raffinose, salicin, and sucrose.
Negative results for arginine hydrolysis, fermentation of: arabinose, glycerol, inositol, inulin, mannitol, melezitose, rhamnose, ribose,
sorbitol, trehalose, and xylose.
Lactose fermentation is variable.
