Phylum Bacillota (Firmicutes), Class Bacilli, Order Lactobacillales, Family Streptococcaceae, Genus Lactococcus, Lactococcus

Species description is based on a single isolate.
Gram-positive coccoid cells, 1.05 μm in diameter, occuring as single cells, pairs or
chains. Non-motie. Endospores are not formed.
Grows well anaerobically on M17 agar at 30 ºC. Grows at 10 ºC, but not at 44 ºC. weak
alpha-haemolysis on blood sheep agar is produced. Grows in 3% NaCl (weakly in
4% NaCl) and at pH 5.0 (not at pH 4). Facultatively anaerobic.
Isolated from cow milk collected from a bovine herd in Valle Trompia, Italy. Susceptible to ampicillin, chroramphenicol, gentamicin,
kanamycin, streptomycin, erythromycin, clindamycin, tetracycline and vancomycin.

Slow milk acidification. Ammonia is produced from arginine.
Positive results for acid phosphatase, chymotrypsin, aesculin hydrolysis, alpha-glucosidase, leucine aminopeptidase, valine
arylamidase, acid production from: amygdalin, fructose, glucose, galactose, glycogen, lactose, maltose, mannose, mannitol, salicin,
sucrose, beta-gentiobiose and D-xylose.
Can oxidize: D- and L-arabinose, D-mannose, D-xylose, D-ribose, D-fructose, L-lyxose, beta-cyclodextrin, 2-deoxy-D-ribose,
D-glucosamine, 5-keto-D-gluconic acid and dihydroxyacetone.
Negative results for alkaline phosphatase, catalase, esterase-lipase, alpha- and beta-galactosidase, beta-glucuronidase, oxidase,
acid production from: L-arabinose, arbutin, glycerol, inulin, melezitose, melibiose, raffinose, turanose, ribose, starch, sorbitol and
trehalose.
