Species description is based on a single isolate.
Gram-positive cocci, 0.5-0.8 µm in diameter. Non-motile. Non-sporeforming.
Colonies on PYES medium are light yellow, circular, entire, somewhat convex,
opaque and approximately 1.5 mm in diameter after 24 h at 28 ºC. Growth occurs
between 10 and 37 ºC with an optimal growth temperature of 28 ºC; no growth is
observed at 4 or 40 ºC. Optimum pH for growth is  8.0-9.0 (range 5.5-12). Optimum
NaCl concentration is 0-5% (range 0-15%). Aerobic.
Isolated from an alkaline soil sample collected from the eastern desert of Egypt. Susceptible to rifampicin and streptomycin.

Positive results for catalase, alpha-glucosidase and lipase.
Can utilize as sole carbon sources for growth (with no acid production): glucose, galactose, sucrose, arabinose, mannose, mannitol,
maltose, starch, xylose, ribose, cellobiose, salicin, sorbitol, lactose, dextrin, amygdalin, glycine and lysine.

Negative results for arginine dihydrolase, casein hydrolysis, gelatin hydrolysis, beta-glucuronidase, alpha- and beta-galactosidase,
N-acetyl-beta-glucosaminidase, beta-glucosidase, H
2S production, indole production, lysine decarboxylase, methyl red test, nitrate
reduction, ornithine decarboxylase, oxidase, starch hydrolysis, tyrosinase, Tweens 20 and 80 and urease.
No utilization of: L-alanine, beta-alanine, arbutin, cellobiose, fructose, N-acetyl-D-glucosamine, glycerol, L-histidine, myo-inositol,
itaconate, D-mannitol, melibiose, mesaconate, L-ornithine, L-rhamnose, L-ornithine, trehalose, L-tryptophan and arginine.
Different results based on different methods were obtained for D-arabinose, galactose and ribose.
