Gram-negative medium-large rods with a tendency to grow as diplobacilli or in short
chains. Nonmotile.

Colonies are grayish white, smooth, and convex, vary in size from 1 to 1.5 mm, and
are surrounded by a wide area of hemolysis after 36-48 h of aerobic incubation
on 5% blood agar plates. Grow poorly on nutrient agar. Aerobic. Optimum growth
temperature 30-37 ºC. No growth at 42 ºC. No growth in minimal medium containing
ammonium and acetate. Nonproteolytic (Loeffler slant and gelatin negative).
