Acid-fast coccoid rods. Older cultures show a decrease in acid-fastness.
Colonies are pale yellow, scotochromogenic, shiny, smooth with a slightly ridged
margin. Growth on Middlebrook 7H11 agar with oleic, albumin, dextrose, catalase
reaches maturity in 7 days at 28 ºC and in 5 days at 37 ºC. Can grow in 5% NaCl
media. Can survive at 8 ºC with little cell replication.
