Phylum Pseudomonadota (Proteobacteria), Class Gammaproteobacteria, Order Pasteurellales, Family Pasteurellaceae, Genus
Pasteurella, Pasteurella canis Mutters, Ihm, Pohl, Frederiksen and Mannheim 1985.
Old synonym: Pasteurella multocida biotype 6 (dog-type strains).
Nonmotile, Gram-negative, coccoid to pleomorphic rods, singly or grouped in short chains or filamentous forms.
Colony morphology resembles that of P. multocida biotype 1, usually reach a diameter of 1 mm. Nonhemolytic, V-factor independent,
optimum temperature is 36 ºC. Does not grow on MacConkey agar.
Biotype 1 is recovered mainly from the oral cavities of dogs and from dog-bite wounds in humans; biotype 2 have been isolated from
pneumonia from calves
Have been isolated from the lungs of calves with pneumonia (biotype 2) and from dog-bite wounds in humans (biotype 1).

Positive results for nitrates reduction, oxidase, alkaline phosphatase, catalase,
ornithine decarboxylase, acid production from: D(-) fructose, D(+) galactose, D(+)
glucose, D(+) mannose and sucrose (saccharose).
Negative results for gelatinase, H2S production (TSI), Voges-Proskauer test, urease,
arginine dehydrolase, lysine decarboxylase, ONPG, citrate (Simmons), acid production
from: glycerol, xylitol, L(+) arabinose, D(-)arabinose, dulcitol, meso-inositol, mannitol,
D(-) sorbitol, L(-) fucose, D(+) glucose-gas, L(+) rhamnose, L(-) sorbose, D(+)xylose,
cellobiose, lactose, maltose, D(+) melibiose, raffinose, dextrin, inulin, esculin and
salicin.
Variable results for alpha-glucosidase and acid production from trehalose.
Indole production is positive for biotype 1 and negative for biotype 2.
