Lonepinella,
 Lonepinella koalarum Osawa et al. 1996, type species of the genus.
Gram-negative coccoidal forms (0.5 x 2.0 um), short rods (0.5 x 3-5 um), and
extremely filamentous rods (0.5 x 50-100 um). Non-motile. Non-spore-forming.
Grow well on brain heart infusion medium at 35°C but not at 15 °C or 40°C. The
strains grow poorly on MacConkey agar at 35°C. Colonies on Wilkins-Chalgren
anaerobe blood agar after 3 days are smooth, opaque, more or less convex, and 1-3
mm in diameter, and non-pigmented. Growth is not dependent on V factor or X factor.
Produces gallic acid from tannic acid (tannase positive) and converts gallic acid to
pyrogallol (gallate decarboxylase positive). Facultatively anaerobic.
Isolated from the feces and wound infections of koalas, (Phascolarctos cinereus).
Resistant to vancomycin.
Two strains were isolated from wound infections of koalas, one wild and one captive.

Positive results for beta-galactosdase, Voges-Proskauer test, acid production from: amygdalin, L-arabinose, D-glucose, melibiose,
rhamnose and sucrose.
Can utilize: glucose, melibiose amygdalin, and L-arabinose.
Possibly positive for alpha-glucosidase and alpha-amylase (genes detection).

Negative results for arginine dihydrolase, catalase,gelatinase, H
2S production, indole production, lysine decarboxylase, ornithine
decarboxylase, oxidase, tryptophane deaminase, urease, acid production from: mannitol, inositol, and glucitol.
