Mannheimia, Mannheimia pernigra Kuhnert et al. 2021.
Synonyms: Mannheimia ovis Li et al. 2021, Bisgaard Taxon 39.
According to Bisgaard and Christensen (2023), Mannheimia pernigra is an earlier heterotypic synonym of Mannheimia ovis Li et al.
2021.
Gram-negative coccoid or pleomorphic rods, 0.2-0.3 x 0.2-1.5 μm. Non-motile.
On Columbia agar, the colonies are greyish1-2 mm in diameter, circular, raised,
smooth, and semitransparent. Smaller-growing variants can be observed and some
strains might show colony variation. Optimal growth is obtained on TSA with 5%
sheep blood at 37 °C with 5% CO2. Weak beta-haemolysis is produced on 5.0% (v/v)
sheep blood agar. CAMP reaction is negative. No requirement for X- or V-factor.
The Mannheimia ovis strains grow at 12-45 °C, pH 3-11 and 0.5-8.0% (w/v) NaCl;
optimally at 37 °C, pH 9.0 and 1.0% (w/v) of NaCl. No growth on MacConkey agar.
Facultatively anaerobic.
Isolated from the nasopharynx of veal calves in Swizerland and from sheep lungs in China.
The Mannheimia ovis strains were isolated from lungs of dead sheep with hemorrhagic pneumonia.
