Gram-negative cells. Non-motile.
Colonies are grey, 2 mm in diameter and beta-haemolytic after 24 h aerobic
incubation at 37 ºC on sheep blood agar. Optimum growth occurs at 30–37 ºC, range
20-40 ºC. NAD (V-factor) is not required for growth. No growth on MacConkey agar.
Facultatively anaerobic.
Isolated from laboratory mouse, laboratory rats and a Syrian hamster.

Positive results for catalase, beta-galactosidase, beta-glucuronidase, indole production, nitrate reduction, ornithine decarboxylase,
oxidase, urease, acid production (API 50 CH) from: D-fructose, glycerol, D-galactose, D-glucose, gluconate, N-acetyl-glucosamine,
inositol, lactose, D-mannose, D-mannitol, maltose, melibiose, raffinose, sucrose, D-sorbitol and D-xylose.
Negative results for acetoin production, arginine dihydrolase, citrate utilization, gelatin hydrolysis, alpha-glucosidase, H2S production,
lysine decarboxylase, tryptophan deaminase, acid production from: D- and L-arabinose, D- and L-arabitol, adonitol, amygdalin, arbutin,
cellobiose, dulcitol, aesculin, erythritol, D- and L-fucose, glycogen, gentiobiose, 2- and 5-keto-gluconate, inulin, D-lyxose, melezitose,
methyl D-mannoside, methyl D-glucoside, L-rhamnose, L-sorbose, salicin, starch, trehalose, turanose, D-tagatose, xylitol, L-xylose and
methyl xyloside.
Variable results for acid production from D-ribose.
