Haemophilus,
Haemophilus seminalis Zheng et al. 2020.
Gram-negative, coccobacilli or rods, 0.4-0.8 x 0.6-1.8 µm, without any filaments or
capsule. Non-motile. Non-acid-fast.
Colonies are smooth, low, convex, greyish and translucent on Haemophilus
chocolate 2 agar. Growth occurs at 28-40 °C (optimum, 32-37 ºC.) and is enhanced in
the presence of CO
2. Not haemolytic on blood agar (one strain reported positive).
Requires V factor for growth, but not X factor. Good growth on Haemophilus chocolate
2 agar and chocolate agar +PolyVitex, but not on Columbia blood agar, MacConkey
agar, BHI agar, CHAB agar, MH agar or lysogeny broth agar. Facultatively anaerobic.
Isolated from human semen and sputum specimens in China.
Susceptible to sulbactam/ampicillin, amoxycillin/clavulanic acid, piperacillin, piperacillin/tazobactam, cefotaxime, ceftriaxone,
cefuroxime sodium, cefepime, ceftazidime, cefixime, aztreonam, meropenem, imipenem, azithromycin, ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin
chloramphenicol and rifampin, intermediate to ampicillin and resistant to cefaclor and tetracycline.
Opportunistic pathogen.
