Spirabiliibacterium, Spirabiliibacterium mucosae Bisgaard and Christensen 2021, type species of the genus.
Synonym: Bisgaard taxon 14.
Gram-negative coccobacilli. Non-motile. Non-spore-forming.
Colonies on bovine agar are non-haemolytic, regular and circular, slightly raised and
greyish with entire margins. Pigment is not formed. The colonies are 0.5-1.5mm in
diameter after 24h of aerobic incubation at 37 ºC. The colonies have a buttery
consistency and are easily removed from the agar surface. No pigment production.
No growth on KCN. V- and X-factors are not required for growth. No growth on
MacConkey agar.
Isolated from different lesions in birds including ducks, turkeys, pigeons, geese and peafowl.
Isolated from sinusitis in ducks, pharyngitis in turkeys, rhinitis in a pigeon, fowl cholera-like lesions in turkeys, lesions in pigeons,
goose and a peafowl.
