Pseudomonas abietaniphila Mohn et al. 1999.
Gram negative rods,  0.7 x 1.2-2.5 um. Motile.
Grows on pulp mill effluents with resin acids by using them as a carbon source.
Resin acids are diterpenoid carboxylic acids which occur naturally in trees (pines).
Colonies are clear, translucent, smooth, circular and convex. Aerobic, optimum
temperature 30 ºC. Can grow on Trypticase Soy Agar; Trypticase Soy Broth.
Isolated from soil and aerated wastewater discharges of bleached kraft wood pulp mills.
Unknown pathogenicity (none).

Bacteria is able to degrade dehydroabietic acid.
Positive results for arginine dihydrolase (API 20 NE may give negative results), catalase, oxidase and urease (API 20 NE may give
negative results).
Can assimilate: L-arabinose, L-fructose, rhamnose, D-maltose, capric acid, malic acid, adonitol, mannitol, D-mannose (weak),
myo-inositol, maltose, D-sorbitol, sucrose, D-trehalose, xylitol, D- and L-fucose, D- and L-arabitol, gluconate, 2-ketogluconate,
monomethyl succinate, D-glucosaminate, D-glucuronate, p-hydroxyphenylacetate (weak), succinamate, D,L-carnitine, urocanate,
putrescine, 2-aminoethanol, D,L-alpha-glycerol phosphate, abietic acid, dehydroabietic acid, linoleic acid,  pyruvic acid, D-galactose,
D-glucose, D-xylose and glycerol. Uses poorly 12- plus 14-chlorodehydroabietic and palmitic acids.

Negative results for hydrolysis of aesculin.
No utilization of amygdalin, arbutin, salicin, melibiose, 5-ketogluconate, pimaric acid, isoopimaric acid, acetic acid, formate,
propionate and glycyl L-glutamate.
