Azorhizophilus paspali (Dobereiner 1966) Thompson and Skerman 1981, type species of the genus.

Basonym:
Azotobacter paspali Dobereiner 1966.
Gram-negative, blunt rods to ellipsoid, 1.6-2.5 x 5.0-10.0 µm. Long filamentous cells
up to 60 µm can occur. Motile by peritrichous flagella. Cysts are formed in old
cultures. Produces poly-beta-hydroxybutyrate.
Colonies are opaque with an entire or undulate edge, raised, usually not evenly
convex, and butyrous with a dull or rough surface. Grows at 14 and 37 ºC, but does
not occur at 9 ºC. A yellow-green fluorescent pigment is produced on iron-deficient
medium. Aerobic.
Isolated from the rhizosphere of the grass Paspalum notatum cv. Batatais.
Undetermined.

Positive results for catalase, citrate utilization, oxidase, and urease, acid production from glucose, mannitol and sucrose.
Can utilize fructose, glucose, acetate, pyruvate, fumarate, malate, succinate, alpha-oxoglutarate, lactate, DL-gluconate, acetyl
methylcarbinol, and sucrose.

Negative results for peroxidase, nitrate reduction to nitrites, starch hydrolysis (positive in Liu's study).
No utilization of arabinose, D-gucuronate, D-galacturonate, lactose, mannose, xylose, ribose, fucose, trehalose,
DL-beta-hydroxybutyrate, raffinose, glutarate, glycolate, glycerol (positive in Liu's study), mannitol, phenol, rhamnose, caproate,
caprylate, meso-inositol, malonate, 1-butanol, propionate, beta-phenylpropionate, n-butyrate, glutarate, benzoate, melibiose, maltose,
and sorbitol.

Variable results for H
2S production, utilization of 1-propanol.
