Gram-negative rods. Motile by a single polar flagellum. Non-spore-forming.
Colonies on nutrient agar are smooth, circular, non-pigmented and non-hemolytic
when they are grown on blood agar. No phenazine pigments are produced on the
King A medium. Produce the fluorescent pigment on both the King B medium and the
SI medium. Significant growth is only observed at low salt concentrations (0.8%) but
not at 5% and 7% NaCl. Strains grow at 4-35 ºC (optimally at 30 ºC), but not at 41 ºC.
Growth also occurs on cetrimide agar (N-acetyl N,N,N-trimethylammonium). Produce
levan from sucrose.
Isolated from mineral waters.
Clinical significance is not known.
